My running report : January 2012

With this post I start a new series in which I’ll report my running activity.

I started to run seriously in June 2010, 18 months ago.

Palais de L'Isle in Annecy

Annecy

My objective is to be able to run a marathon. This should happen this year in october in Amsterdam (to be confirmed).

My short term objective is to run the Annecy half-Marathon on apritl 15th.

I ran this race in 2011 in 2:07.

The objective for this year is to go below 2 hours.

This will be a big challenge as my agenda is really full in the next months.

In January I ran 39 km. This is quite low, last year I ran 83.

My motivation was not very high, and I did not manage to find the motivation to wake-up at 5:30 am to run in the cold night.

The race is now in 10 weeks, so it’s time to start to run seriously 3 times per week.

My best Chrome extensions : aviary

Aviary is an online image editor that proposes a full range of tools.

I use it when I have simple images to edit.

I like it because it’s easy, simple, free, and in the cloud, so I’ve access to all my creation whatever device I use.

The aviary chrome extension is very basic, with a simple click it capture the current page and opens aviary for further editing.

If you have to do such action, I highly recommend you to install it.

I use it a lot.

If you want to try it, just follow the link.

My experience with ZTD / Week 3 results (3 MITs per day) : 6% success (94% failure…)

Pasture Juniper (Juniperus communis ssp. depressa)

This is the report #3 of my experimental implementation of  Zen To Done the productivity methodology by Leo Babauta.

As a reminder, the first habit I’ve decided to implement is to define every morning the 3 Most Important Topics (MITs) I want / need / commit to achieve during the day.

During week #1, the success rate has been 52 % (11/21) , during week #2, it has been 47% (9/19).

Here’re the results of week #3 :

  • 3 MITs for the week : Did I defined 3 MITs  ? :  YES,  How many did I achieve : 0/3
  •  Day 1 (January 30th) : Did I defined 3 MITs ? : YES, How many did I achieve :0/3
  • Day 2  (January 31st) : Did I define 3 MITs ? : YES, How many did I achieve : 1/3
  • Day 3 (February 1st) : Did I define 3 MITs ? : NO
  • Day 4 (February 2nd) :Did I define 3 MITs ? : NO
  • Day 5 (February 3rd) : Did I define 3 MITs ? : NO
  • Total : I’ve defined the MITs 2 times instead of 5, I’ve achieved  1/18.

 What are  my conclusions ?

  • 1/18  is a very poor result.
  • In fact during this week I did not use ZTD. I did not take time to define 3 MITs everyday.
  • By the way, I did achieve a lot of things during this week but without planning them.
  • As a consequence, my achievements are not the most important ones, so it’s not a so good result.
  • I need to improve my routine when I’m travelling to make sure I define the 3 MITs before starting my day

For the new coming week, my objective is to continue the implementation of this new habit, with a better result (which will not be so difficult)  !

The Art of presentation #2 (we need to improve our presentations !)

95% of presentations are boring. Everybody use PowerPoint few people know how to use it.

This post is number 2 to introduce you a very good serie of slides written Eduardo S. de la Fuente .

If you do presentations, you should read this carefully.

If you missed the first one it’s here.

In this second edition, you’ll learn :

  • you need to prepare. Prepare what you want to say. Prepare what you want the audience to remember
  • a presentation is : the slides, the notes and handouts.
  • a presentation is a scalable story
  • you need a pen and paper !
  • you need to think think think !

Relax, breath and enjoy !

Some incredibles numbers about apple

Lately Apple published their quaterly financial results.

Based on increasing sales (for iPad, iPhone), the results are very good.

Apple has now USD 97 Billions in cash.

This very good infographic shows all the good numbers at once.

My best photos : Fly fishing in the Alps

I took this photo in Pelleautier Lake in French Alps.

It was a sunny day (like very often in the area).

The moutain in background is the “Pic de Bure”.

This post is part of a serie of posts in which I present my best photos. All of them have been taken by me. The quality is not professionnal of course, but I love them.

My new A5 notebook with top spiral. If you’re lefty, you should try it !

As I’ve explained in another post, I’m back to paper to take notes.

info au survol

I think I’ve found the good notebook for me, it’s a simple A5 Note pad with top spiral .

Top spiral is important because :

  • it makes it easy to turn pages
  • it makes it easy to tear a page
  • it makes it easy for me to write, as I’m a lefty (yes, for lefty people, writing in a “normal” notebook is difficult, with a  a top spiral I can write without pressing my wrists into the spiral )

I use it in a very simple way : 1 page = 1 topic.

Every meeting, every discussion, every topic I use a new black page, starting by writing in the right top corner the date and the topic.

I do not hesitated to tear pages if what I wrote is not valuable or if I’ve copied it in my electronic system because it was valuable.

And you, what do you use ?

My experience with ZTD / Week #2 results (3 MITs per day) : 47% success !

Pasture Juniper (Juniperus communis ssp. depressa)

As I’ve explained in a previous post, I’ve decided to use Zen To Done productivity methodology by Leo Babauta.

This is the feedback after 2 weeks.

As a reminder, the first habit I’ve decided to implement is to define every morning the 3 Most Important Topics (MITs) I want / need / commit to achieve during the day.

During week #1, the success rate has been 52 % (11/21)

Here’re the results of week #2 :

  • 3 MITs for the week : Did I defined 3 MITs  ? :  YES,  How many did I achieve : 1/3
  •  Day 1 (January 23th) : Did I defined 3 MITs ? : YES, How many did I achieve :3/3
  • Day 2  (January 24th) : Did I define 3 MITs ? : YES, How many did I achieve : 2/3
  • Day 3 (January 25th) : Did I define 3 MITs ? : YES (4), How many did I achieve : 2/4
  • Day 4 (January 26th) :Did I define 3 MITs ? : YES, How many did I achieve : 1/3
  • Day 5 (January27th) : Did I define 3 MITs ? : NO , How many did I achieve : 0/3
  • Total : I’ve defined the MITs 4 times instead of 5, I’ve achieved  9/19.

 What are  my conclusions ?

  • 9/19 is a poor result. It’s even worse than last week (11/21). I’ve clearly over committed to myself during that week. Like last week there’s 1 specific MIT that I’ve pushed from day 1 to day 5  that made me loose 5  points.
  • I did not defined the MITs on friday as my work day started at 6am.
  • Even if the numbers are quite bad, I’m happy with this week. It was a VERY busy week, and defining 3 MITs everyday really helped me to keep control. I’m still happy with my new way to use todo system nirvanahq (I’ve removed all project, and used 1 simple list)

For the new coming week, my objective is to continue the implementation of this new habit, with a better result !
